Privacy Policy — Else-wer
Last updated: 15 September 2026
Else-wer is an audiobook player that connects to an audiobook server that you host and control yourself. This policy explains what the app does with your information. The short version: your library, account and listening data go only to your own server. The developer receives only anonymous crash and usage reports, which you can turn off, and never sells or shares them.
1. Who we are
Else-wer is developed by Syed Yaseen Shabir Ahamed (else-wer.com). Contact: s.syedyaseen.s@gmail.com.
2. Data the developer collects
To find and fix bugs, the app sends crash reports, error reports and anonymous usage events to an error-tracking server (GlitchTip) that the developer operates. No third-party analytics or advertising service is involved, and this data is never sold or shared.
These reports contain:
- technical details of the problem: error message, stack trace, app version, Android version and device model;
- the screens opened and actions taken shortly before it (for example “started playback” or “download failed”);
- a random identifier created when the app is installed, so reports from the same installation can be grouped.
They do not contain your server address, username, password or session token: server addresses and tokens are removed on your device before anything is sent. The app does not deliberately include the titles or files of your audiobooks, although a file or book name can occasionally appear inside an error message.
Reports are kept for up to 90 days and then deleted automatically. You can turn reporting off at any time in Menu → Privacy → Send crash & usage reports. Once it is off, nothing is sent.
3. Data handled by the app
To work, the app processes the following information. It is stored on your device or sent only to the server address you enter:
| Data | Purpose | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Server address | To connect to your audiobook server | Stored on your device |
| Username and password | To sign in to your server | Sent only to your server; the password is not stored on the device |
| Session token | To keep you signed in | Stored on your device; sent only to your server |
| Listening progress and listening history | To resume playback, show your stats, and sync across your devices | Stored on your device and synced with your server |
| Downloaded audiobooks and cover images | Offline listening | Stored in the app’s private storage on your device |
Your server is operated by you (or by whoever hosts it for you), not by the developer. How that server stores and protects your data is governed by its operator, not by this policy.
4. Permissions
- Notifications / foreground service (media playback): to show playback controls and keep audio playing in the background.
- Network access: to communicate with your server and to send crash reports.
The app does not request access to your files, photos, microphone, contacts or location. Downloads are kept in the app’s own private storage, which needs no permission.
5. Security
Communication is only as secure as the server address you configure. If you use an https:// address, traffic between the app and your server is encrypted. If you use a plain http:// address (for example on a home network), it is not encrypted, and we recommend using HTTPS for any server that is reachable from the internet.
6. Data retention and deletion
Apart from the crash and usage reports described in section 2, all data the app stores stays on your device. You can delete it at any time by signing out, by deleting downloads within the app, by clearing the app’s storage in Android settings, or by uninstalling the app. Data held on your server can be deleted by that server’s operator. To delete an account, see Delete your account.
7. Children
The app is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone.
8. Changes
If this policy changes, the updated version will be published at this address with a new “Last updated” date.
